INTRODUCTION

Hello and welcome to our site!

Ah, gender inequality. We've all heard the term, but... what exactly is it?

As defined by encyclo.co.uk, gender inequality is the "difference in the status, power, and prestige women and men have in groups, collectivities and societies."

Gender inequality is a large issue in America today. In fact, it's all around us! Through many different medias, including editorial cartoons, we see multiple ways that men and women are portrayed by society. Our site is aimed to find and analyze editorial cartoons from the following four categories:

Inequality in the workplace

Inequality in pay

Inequality in sports

Inequality in the household

We'll conclude by hitting the campus of Utah State University to find out what our fellow students know and don't know about gender inequality.

BACKGROUND

There are many physiological differences between all genders of humans, but the term “Gender” refers to cultural and social distinctions that are associated with sex.  It is similar when comparing the terms “race”, and “ethnicity”. Throughout the development of a child into an adult, individuals learn how to react and behave from their surroundings. Gender roles are a concept coined by society as to how men and women are expected to behave. Society creates standards, ideals, and what is acceptable based on opinion and general consensus. In today’s media, masculine roles are associated with men, while women are commonly associated with more nurturing manners. (Covert,B)

We now live in a society where the concept of gender roles is challenged because there a widespread realization that gender roles restrict both genders from accomplishing feats that either are equally capable of accomplishing.  Political cartoons tackle these issues that utilize satire in many instances to depict metaphors of how women are either undermined, or taken advantage of in the workplace, wage gaps, sports, or the in their own households.
