CONCLUSION

After analyzing all of the cartoons and gathering all of the statements from each of the students interviewed, the same overall conclusion is found in each area of analysis: Gender inequality is still apparent in today’s society, regardless of the efforts made in raising awareness that many of the cartoons aimed to do. To our surprise, the students that were interviewed did acknowledge that inequality is apparent in pay and in stereotypes, but that was about all they recognized. Unfortunately, gender roles and gender inequality are rampant in all areas of society still today. However, there have been advances in women’s rights and in equal treatment, but there are still instances where women are undermined, paid less, and misrepresented. This begs the question, “Why is inequality still apparent even though it has been publicly recognized?”

The cartoons analyzed provide an answer to this question through their satire and metaphors reflecting everyday life. In the issue of gender roles, cartoons offer us depictions of truth and metaphor for society to realize that inequality is still apparent in everyday life. The goals of the cartoonists in these illustrations is to cause realization and conversation through visual cues. Many of the cartoons depict examples of inequality; such as a woman being paid less, hoping that viewers will realize that these offenses still happen and need to be put to rest. Their purpose is to continually remind us, as a society, so that we can eventually abolish instances of inequality and aim for a more supportive society.
